The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification) sets the standards for the cleaning industry, as well as for water damage restoration training. There are different levels involved when dealing with water damage.
These different categories can be easily identified. The next time you call your local restoration company, it will be much easier to guide your technician in forming the perfect water damage restoration plan for your home.
Category 1 means that the water damage was caused by clean water. Clean water comes from a sanitary source, such as a drinking fountain, faucet, or bathtub. Category 1 can immediately turn into category 2 or 3 if given enough time.
This is the easiest restoration level with a slow evaporation rate. With category 1 water, only part of the room is affected, and the area does not include permeable materials. This can be easily cleaned up and there are no health hazards involved.
An example of category 2 water is the overflow coming from a malfunctioning dishwasher or washing machine. Category 2 water has been used to clean something, including to clean food, dirt, and bodily fluids in general.
This level is a little more challenging because we look past the origin of the water and check out other factors. The air circulation inside the room, the indoor temperature of the home, and the overall cleanliness can help determine how much disinfectant is needed. The evaporation rate is quicker, so it can affect your walls or floors more easily. Beware of unmanaged moisture when dealing with this level, as it can lead to mold growth.
This is a backup or overflow from toilets, sewers, and even septic systems. This kind of water can contain human or animal waste, also known as sewage. Black water carries diseases, viruses, and bacteria. If not cleaned quickly, it can harm your health. Water damage of this level requires the removal of porous materials, such as carpet, drywall, cushions, etc. because anything that black water has touched could endanger your health.
This kind of water damage requires hot water extraction and disinfectant. In most cases, items affected by black water will need to be repaired or thrown out. Category 3 has the fastest evaporation rate and almost every part of your home can absorb black water.
If you have stagnant water in your home, never let it stay for too long. If left alone, there is a high chance that it can breed mold that causes respiratory problems.
